Youth Work Sports Ministry

This work further builds upon the process of engagement, both from 'The Bus' and the drop in sessions. Its' purpose is to develop a range of opportunities for young people to become involved in of a physical nature, to develop team building skills, to work in partnership in a situation and to enjoy the physical activity for its own sake. This work begins in the Alternative Curriculum of the Schools where the team work with young people excluded from education who would not otherwise participate in sports activity, through to Summer sports camps / weeks with a particular focus on one or more sports, to weekly sports activities for older teenagers and those in their late teens / early twenties who are not in education, employment or training.

The use of sport is not exclusively a male domain, female members of staff are also involved in the work and funding for a basketball/netball court adjacent to the Family Centre in Raffles is being sought.

The sports programmes are defined into two categories, those for participation where general enjoyment has a higher priority and where the engagement process and relationship building can continue, and also into the field of excellence in sport where those with a particular gifting for a sporting activity can be coached in their development and signposted to an existing club to foster a sense of loyalty / membership / commitment.

This work will continue to develop into new areas of the city and activities.
